I seize the opportunity now that my baby is sleeping peacefully. I walk in very slowly, quietly and watch him enthralled for a seconds, I love to watch my precious children while they sleep, so quiet (it's the only time of day when there is peace and quiet in the house), so absolutely perfect. I feel him breathing softly. I extend my arm. On one hand I carry a small syringe, loaded with one milliliter of Apiretal, a " tiny winy bit of pink syrup" as my Katie says, and in the other a bottle of water that I leave by the pillow. I think this is the best time to give him the medicine. I slip my arm under his head with great care to incorporate him a little and point to his mouth as well as they can in the shadows of soft colors provided by the Disney nightlight. As my baby notices the syringe barely brushing his lips, he begins to shake his head violently like a raging bull, he wiggles under my arm like a salamander, half asleep. What, a surprise attack ? - he must think.
I keep trying, his heavy increasingly heavy on my arm, my hand pointing to his tightly closed mouth while he still trying to headbutt me. The dim light is changing color, red, blue, pink, lilac, at times it is almost impossible to find the mouth. "It´s ok, my baby, a tiny bit of medicine, my love ...". My arm is burning, pain radiating up my neck, leaning as I am in a somewhat forced position over the cradle. My little angel is dead set on not taking the Apiretal, he does come from a long line of stubborn characters on both sides of the family. I'm not used to so much fighting, Alex has always taken his medicines and with Katie, being a woman after all, bribery often works. Promise her a "surprise" and she´ll do what you ask. I almost have it. "Go on, my love, that's it, son ...". I hold him, aim, fire. The syringe is stuck, I push .... NOW ... .. The light changes color. The face of my son, too, because I miss the shot and there is Apiretal everywhere except in Nico´s mouth. The whole right side of his face is pink, for a moment I think it is the light, but no, it's damn Apiretal that drips from the eye to the ear. He is still half asleep but I think I see a look of scorn on his face. Nico 1 - Mom 0. - C´mon Nico, what, you do not want to get better?. Fine with me, don´t take it ... - I murmur between my teeth while I clean the pink dripping with wet wipes. He is asleep, but I feel that I understands me - What´s happening, mommy? - Alex whispers from his room - It´s ok baby, I have to give Nico his medicine and he does not want it, go to sleep Half asleep, my baby raises an eyebrow. Are you gonna try again, Mommy?. Come on, make my day - I notice he thinks to himself. - Well, you have to take it, Nico Plan B. I prepare a bottle of warm milk. I prepare the syringe again. This time, I will not fail. With great care I take him out of the crib and into my arms, I seat with him on the sofa to see if I can trick him into taking the medicine while he drinks his bottle. Damn, I've sat on the wrong side of the couch and the hand that is free is the left, with which I cannot do anything. I prop the bottle between my chin and his chest, I take the syringe, I aim, he resists again, I take the bottle slightly out, I put the syringe to the side of his mouth mouth, I squeeze hard, Nico turns his head, the syringe is stuck again, I shoot fast ... ... I never really liked that blue cushion, anyway. A milliliter of Apiretal goes a long way, literally. The right sleeve of my pajamas, the sofa arm and the cushion are covered in dripping pink goo. Nico's mouth has not gotten a drop. My little rascal looks at me and beams. How many more like you to give me the medicine, Mommy?. Nico 2 - Mama O I let him finish the bottle, I take him back to the crib, I clean, I change my pajamas and ponder whether it is worth trying again. My pride says I cannot be beaten by an 8 months old baby. My common sense says he has no fever, it seems that his teeth are not bothering him much right now and he is satisfied with his bottle (or with his humiliating mommy, I'm not sure). and he has just fallen asleep. It's almost two in the morning, better leave it for tomorrow morning, when reinforcements arrive.
I kiss his sticky forehead and I retreat humiliated. I feel him laughing in his sleep as I turn to leave the room quietly.

  2. Hola,
He descubierto tu blog hace poco, y me gusta mucho.

    Blanca
